What is Qutenza used for?
This medication is used to relieve pain caused by nerve damage due to diabetes or shingles (herpes zoster) infection. Capsaicin works by decreasing a certain natural substance in your body (substance P) that helps pass pain signals to the brain.

This medication is for use on the skin only. It is applied to the affected area by a health care professional as directed by your doctor, usually every 3 months as needed. It should not be applied around your eyes, inside your nose or mouth, or on the face or scalp. If the medication does get in those areas, rinse with plenty of water. Tell your doctor right away if you cough, sneeze, or have watery eyes, throat irritation, or shortness of breath during the treatment.
The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
You may have burning or increased pain at the application site during treatment. This may also raise your blood pressure. Tell your doctor right away if these symptoms occur. You may be directed to take another pain reliever (such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen). Your doctor may also check your blood pressure.
Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.
