There are a number of different types of ulcers, most of which can cause pain and other symptoms. Peptic ulcers, which form in the stomach, are the most common ulcer-related condition and typically require medication for treatment.
If you suffer from peptic, or any other kind of ulcers, and have been prescribed medication, you may be eligible for an ulcer medication discount. Learn more about peptic ulcers and how to find discounts on medication below.
What are Peptic Ulcers?
Peptic ulcers are a common condition that can go undetected for years because, for some, they may cause no symptoms. However, many of those with peptic ulcers often experience pain in the upper abdomen or the back after eating or at night.
Approximately one in 10 people in the U.S. have peptic ulcers. If you are one of them, you’d know that a peptic ulcer can sometimes result in gnawing pain, nausea and bloating. These unpleasant symptoms may make it difficult to do your daily activities.

Managing Peptic Ulcers
Contrary to popular belief, peptic ulcers have not been proven to be caused by a poor diet. While eating more fruit and vegetables is good for your overall health, it won’t necessarily treat your peptic ulcer.
Doctors typically prescribe medications to address the symptoms of peptic ulcers as well as keep them from getting worse. These include:
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Prevacid®, Protonix® and Prilosec® to reduce stomach acid
- Histamine receptor blockers (H2 blockers) like Pepcid®, which also reduces stomach acid
- Antibiotics to kill H. pylori, the bacteria that causes most ulcers
- Protective medications like Carafate® or even over-the-counter medications like Pepto-Bismol® that form a barrier over the ulcer, reducing pain and helping it heal
Taking prescribed medication is crucial, as this may help prevent possible complications of untreated ulcers such as:
- Perforation of the stomach or intestinal wall
- Obstruction of the small intestine
- Internal bleeding, which in turn may cause anemia or severe blood loss
Dealing With the Cost of Ulcer Medication
Ulcer medication can be costly, especially if you take it regularly or if you’re taking other prescription medications as well.
A poll by KFF found that about one in four Americans find it hard to afford their medication. The groups with the most difficulty paying for their prescriptions include those who:
- Spend at least $100 a month on prescription medications
- Take four or more prescription drugs
- Make less than $40,000 a year
It also found that three in 10 did not take their prescription medication in the past year because it was too expensive. Poll respondents also reported skipping doses, cutting pills in half and using an over-the-counter drug instead.
However, you don’t have to live with the symptoms of peptic ulcers because of the cost of medication. It’s possible to get an ulcer medication discount. What’s more, there is no need to undergo screening, fill out countless forms or pay a membership fee to get savings on your prescription medication.
Discount Cards for Ulcer Medication: What They Are, and Where to Get Them
A prescription discount card allows you to save money on your prescription medications. Typically, these can be downloaded via the provider’s website or a mobile app.
How much you save will depend on the pharmacies, manufacturers and the card provider’s relationships with them. You may be able to save anywhere from 20 percent to 80 percent off the retail price.
Many of these discount cards can be used even if you are uninsured or underinsured.
How to Choose a Discount Card for Your Prescription Ulcer Medication
There are quite a few companies that offer discount cards. To help you choose the best one for your needs, you may want to consider the following factors:
The Reputation of the Company
Is the provider a known brand? Does it have a track record of providing excellent service? These are just a couple of the questions you should ask before you choose which card to use to get an ulcer medication discount.
Medications Included
Some discount cards cannot be used to save on certain Rx drugs. Be sure to check if your ulcer medication, whether name-brand or generic, is covered.
Cost and Ease-of-Use
The discount card you choose should be easy to use. You should not have to go through hoops just to get an ulcer medication discount. Likewise, you should not have to pay membership fees or any extra charges, as this would defeat the purpose of saving money on medication.
